Munem Wasif brings forward the conflicted relationship between the idea of development and the larger ecosystem. On one side flows a mighty river while on the other stands an intrusive structure made out of rods, cement, sand and stones. In these photographs, we see a man-made structure, geometric, brutal and monumental in scale, standing tall against the forces of vigorous currents of the Jamuna river that race down on the horizontal plane amidst soft and fragile elements of nature.


Bangladesh is born out of the nerves and veins of numerous rivers spurring out of the Himalayas. These rivers move through the mountains, deciding the very nature of the land they pass through, the ecology, human character, life’s rhythm, politics and economy. Neo-liberal development processes in the last few decades have neglected the natural flow of water, climate and the lives around these areas. With human-centric notions of development, economic gain and consumption of natural resources as the basis of modern life, and the voices of other species have been excluded resulting in the consequent loss of biodiversity.

	Grains of sand particles glisten like stars in these black and white photographs, a ferocious body of water bends hurriedly down the curves, and tall mutilated parts of the structure pierce through the skin of the river silently witnessing the flat plane. Bringing forward this juxtaposition of a horizontal and vertical axis, Munem Wasif’s image based installation discloses a contradictory tale of climate, life, nature and development.One can’t help but ask “What is the definition of development?”  

On 23 June, 2022 swept by the currents of a flood,

Munem Wasif’s haunting series of photographs of an undefined land elucidates the dialectic relationship between a land and its identity, an identity at risk given the relatively new concept of the nation state and of the environmental effects of man’s “progress” post the industrial revolution. Situated on the edge of a blurred boundary of Bangladesh and India, the mundane, almost extra-terrestrial land hides human interaction with its surface and exposes ever-changing curves with Wasif’s repetitive frames. It seems that frames rarely move from each other, slowing down time and motion and blurring the character of a land, disassociating it from its political and geographical identity.


Land of the Undefined Territory questions the identity of a land that is tied to a specific political and geographic context, but which could also be anywhere, as Wasif displaces the viewer from space and time. Wasif’s dispassionate and systematic approach in this series mimics that of an investigation, topographic study, geological survey or a mere aesthetic query, however his technique of using look-alike frames and ambient sounds overcomes the optical unconscious of the camera and evokes elusive feelings and absurd sensitivity in the viewer.

Munem Wasif seeks to reimagine an indigenous “ecosophical” mode of agriculture, where grain is a companion species to humanity, having names, deities and spirits, around which the village organizes itself. He investigates the cultural history of grain, connected to memories of the 1944 Bengal famine, caused by hoarding for British troops, during which millions starved to death, with a common sight of people pleading on the streets for phan, the excess water left over from cooking rice. Seeds Shall Set us Free (2017) is a series of cyanotype prints of rice seeds, referencing at once scientific representation and alpona, the Bengali practice of creating ritual floor paintings using rice paste. 


The artist excavates layers of ecological colonialism from the destruction of agricultural ecologies with the introduction of plantation farming and cash crops. Indigo was one such cash crop, alluded to in Wasif’s use of bright blue hues in his cyanotypes. Agriculture moved away from the subsistence needs of the local communities as it was harnessed towards sustaining flows of capital and balances of accounts with the introduction not only of crop monocultures but also of genetically modified seeds, producing cycles of debt that lead to dispossession and displacement.

In the context of the fraught history of rice cultivation and distribution in Bangladesh, Wasif juxtaposes his cyanotypes of rice grains and plants with archive documents and photographs from one of the largest community grain banks in the country. For this work, the artist collaborated with the research-based organisation UBINIG, founded by a group of activists in 1984 to support the new Naya Krishi Andolan agricultural movement, which currently includes more than 100,000 farming families. This movement promotes local and non-chemical agriculture and indigenous agricultural knowledge to protect biodiversity and workers’ well-being.

Wasif photographed and
composed “Belonging 2001-2013” over a decade-long engagement. The black and
white series portrays the city as the sole protagonist, where the public and
the private overlap in a theatrical cadence. Fragmentary at first, depicting
encounters that often seem contingent, the images slowly morph into a coherent
whole infused with care and compassion. Single frames come to encapsulate a
multiplicity of coexisting lives and ephemeral intimate moments. Wasif singles them
out from within the vast historic landscape of the city.

In “Stereo”, Wasif shifts his
lens to the architecture of inanimate objects as encountered within the
cityscape. Verging almost to the point of abstraction, these colored sets of
diptychs and triptychs discuss various forms of uniformization. They are
typified through the influence of mobile screens, the dependence on mechanized living via an
overstuffed refrigerator, and an increasingly standardized understanding of
time through a digital clock, precise to the seconds, hung in the otherwise
multi-layered streets of Old Dhaka. 


The deliberate juxtaposition of the latest
photographs in the exhibition alongside the earlier black &#38;amp; white work places
the viewer into the hybridized realities of Puran Dhaka, and one is left in a
space with a complex impression of contemporary life.

SPRING SONG

	2016 - Ongoing

25 X 27 inch each, Series of 24 Archival pigment prints, Framed
Munem Wasif constantly
explores the idea of border and 
re-examines the questions around its formation.
How these borders constructed? Who constructs them? How are they broken and
re-formed?
	
Munem Wasif began visiting Rohingya refugee camps on the Myanmar/Bangladesh
border in 2009. The size of the camps has grown exponentially since the violent
incidents beginning in 2017 that caused hundreds of thousands of refugees to
flee into Bangladesh.

“Dark Water”– is a series of
black and white photographs which seems innocuous at first: dark, featureless
masses of water – the empty ocean at its most ordinary form, a stark reminder
of what Rohingyas have gone through to escape a mass execution. Recalling
harrowing details,
 Wasif juxtaposes texts with images to reveal the refugees’
escape at sea. The works reflects constant flow of migration in Bay of Bengal,
where lines of borders are lost in the shades of night.

What can you hold onto when
running away to save your life? How can you be, belong, or settle when nobody
accepts you as a citizen? How do you legally prove your very existence after
decades of systemic violence?

	
Spring Song (2017-2019) is a work in progress that revolves
around objects found in the camps. Placed against vivid monochromatic
backgrounds, these precarious assemblages, decaying documents, and faded
photographs convey fragmented memories and feelings of displacement. These
objects are the testament of determination; a will to eat, to play or to simply
reminisce one's past –in other words, to feel to be human.

In collaboration with Sheikh Mohammad Safdar Hossain Architectural Design – Rashed Chowdhury and Sayedil Ashrafin


Wasif revisited his archive of over a decade of work in Old Dhaka to develop Paper Negative, an installation featuring 28 original paper negatives created with the Box Camera in collaboration with photographer Sheikh Mohamad Safdar Hossain. Spanning locations from Beauty Boarding to Shakhari Bazaar and its bustling streets, each negative, marked with pink and red hues of photographic chemicals, bears encounters with the local people.

Before digital cameras and mobile phones, Box camera studios were common in Old Dhaka, primarily used for official portraits. While Safdar handled the Box camera, Wasif observed, framed, and engaged with the people — together documenting their subjects as they took deep breaths, gazed into the lens, and witnessed their images develop instantly. The subjects, required to hold still, experienced an intimate moment of stillness amidst the public spectacle. This duality—between the collective and the personal—is central to the work, emulating the nature of life itself in the old city.

More recently, Wasif has been drawn to the built environment that forms the skin of Old Dhaka. The evolving architecture and urban infrastructure, shaped by spatial constraints, reflect the city's transient exchanges. The subtleties of community living are often embedded in the distinct aesthetics of these organic formations that are constantly emerging in the city. Wasif documents these occurrences, and uses them as references to explore and create dynamic works in his studio.

	
Through the accumulation of found objects and material experimentation, he assembles forms that, though initially incoherent, come to life in specific spatial arrangements. Pieces of discarded wood, metal wires, parts of furniture are held together in quiet conversations in the space. Refraining from inventing new materials, he focuses on rediscovering existing ones in unexpected configurations, embracing the idea of chance in the process. In “সামান্য/Bare” these accidental encounters uncover histories that are held within the traces of everyday objects

“The fragmented objects here are both disciplined and wired across, and the empty space is filled with bold and soft materials—all have varied functions, some symbolizing the rapid changes brought about by the young generation and global influence. Bold, vertical components that yet deviate from the straight line transforms into curving threads of nuanced harmony. The artist was inspired to create the piece by music, specifically raga, a type of subcontinental classical music in which various musical modes convey unique emotions through progressions, with certain notes given greater weight than others.
	
While making sculptures with found objects, the artist maintains an accessible passageway so that we can casually perceive something extraordinary between the ordinary and the muse, the old and the new. As it navigates between harmony and chaos, the complicated montage of ordered and disordered objects acts like it's slowly going from mono to stereo sound.”

A room full of
machines breathes indisquieted silence. These objects are nothing more than
decrepit metal scraps except to those who smell their memories, and remain
conscious of their histories. All is still inside the abandoned jute factories.
The soft breeze, dripping water, flying feathers, and the rays of sunlight are
the only active elements that fragment this stasis.&#38;nbsp;Wasif’s camera moves
subtly, often intruding upon the objects in the space, transforming their
bodies into sculptural figures.


	 The continuous shifting of frames that occurs
in this process, connects man and machine. The resulting forms submerge and
become a single entity. A concerted dilapidation, slow and firm. The echo of
chirping birds along with the rattle of engines in the outdoors create an
illusory sense of life in the space.

The relationship between man and machine recalls Ritwik
Ghatak’s Ajantrik (The Mechanical Man, 1958), a film that revolves around a cab
driver- Bimal, who lives in a mining town and cares for his battered 1920s
Chevrolet, which he calls Jagadda, like a mother might for her child. This
imaginary construct of memory, care, and struggle is paralleled in Wasif’s
frames.
 

The absence of the faces of workers does not detach us from the
psychological presence of their minds. The body transfers the wrinkles to the
machines. The mere movements and constant silence orchestrate a long waiting,
perhaps for a funeral of the unclaimed death.

These struggles prevailed, and following the shift in power
from East Bengal to Pakistan, jute became a major source of income for the
state, whilst bringing no benefits to the Bengali population. The present- day
closing of many jute factories, and exploitation of labor rights continues to
mirror the past, and slowly blurs our temporal references. There is a
colloquial saying in Bengal – ‘a body gains weight after it has been left by

Twelve hanging scrolls depict drawings of
edibles
and words that loosely compose various proverbs. Proverbs, locally known as “Khona,” refer
to an ecological food table rooted in Bengali folklore, codifying and
prescribing paryicular food produced to be included in the regular menu around
the year. It tells of an intimate relationship between seeds, biodiversity and
life formed by an indigenous and feminine knowledge and the women’s hands who
preserve the seeds. Seeds and crop varieties result from daily interaction with
nature, planets, stars, and poetry. The ancestral wisdom of "Khona"
refers to an ecology where the human is only a part and not the exacting
center.


The aliments presented are the signature
of their origin: they are all part of traditional Bangladeshi cuisines. Each of
them is the product of complex interplays between the formidable diversity of
indigenous seeds, the richness of alluvial soils they best respond to and the
enduring farming skills and wisdom it takes to farm them, which has been passed
verbally across generations.

The fragility of the textile medium
reflects that of the ecosystems in which these edibles were grown. In the
dyeing, drawing, and embroidering of these textiles, Munem Wasif and the
artisans he collaborated with hint at the subsuming of nature under industrial
agriculture and how traditional farming wisdom can inspire a rethink of our
future.

Kheyal follows four characters through
the streets of Old Dhaka in Bangladesh. The title is derived from the Arabic
word ‘Khyal’ or ‘Khayal’, meaning fiction or imagination, and the film captures
the enigmatic environments and unique identities inhabiting the historic city.
Living amid the grandeur of neglected Mughal architecture are dynamic social
groups and spontaneous neighbourhoods that inhabit spaces around courtyards,
narrow lanes and bustling bazaars. Movement and sound is nuanced and intimate,
and recalls the hovering sounds of repeated vocals in the classical music known
as ‘Kheyal’.

Wasif describes his film as a work between fact and fiction, where the lone characters are ‘lost in certain
mental states and found in other magical situations’. Osman Ali revels in music
though he longs to return to his village, Ranju is caught in a number of dark
and strange dreamlike encounters, while the elderly Dadi stares motionless
through a window, and young Nitu eats a pomegranate and skips on a rooftop. 
 

The
film shifts between real and imagined narratives, navigating between the
conscious and subconscious, and reveals the very different rhythm of life that
inhabits the old city.


The work is first shown in 9th Asia Pacific Triennial Of
